Let Freedom Ring - Memorial Day

LET FREEDOM RING

Customers ask “What are your plans for Memorial Day Weekend?” Typically, many of us enjoy the “extra” day off.

Memorial Day originally was known as Decoration Day, which originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Memorial Day 2023 will occur on Monday, May 29.

Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings, heading to the beach, and/or participating in parades.

It unofficially marks the beginning of the summer season.

Locally, Doylestown, Pennsylvania, has held an annual Memorial Day parade which it claims to be the nation's oldest continuously running since 1868.

In 2000, Congress passed the National Moment of Remembrance Act, asking people to stop and remember at 3:00 pm.

What some may not know is in 1918, inspired by the poem -  "In Flanders Fields", YWCA worker Moina Michael attended a YWCA Overseas War Secretaries' conference wearing a silk poppy pinned to her coat and distributed over two dozen more to others present. In 1920, the National American Legion adopted it as its official symbol of remembrance.

While you take a moment to celebrate Memorial Day, may we not forget those that served our Country and lost their lives fighting for our FREEDOM.

Make sure to HONOR and be GRATEFUL for the Freedoms we have the privilege to enjoy each day.

Let US know HOW you celebrate Memorial Day. We would love to know.

Have a safe Memorial Day Weekend.

Let Freedom RING!
